In a fusion of craftsmanship and music, Swiss watchmaker Hublot has teamed up with Depeche Mode to introduce a unique variation of the Spirit of Big Bang timepiece. This new creation pays homage to the British band’s latest musical endeavor. Named after the Latin phrase signifying “remember death,” the Memento Mori watch serves as a melodic reminder to cherish the present moment and appreciate the passage of time. Limited in production, this timepiece blends evocative design elements with high-end watchmaking.
Named the Spirit of Big Bang Depeche Mode, the all-black watch exudes a Gothic vibe rather than the typical New Wave aesthetic. It boasts a 42mm tonneau-shaped ceramic case with a matching ceramic bezel adorned with daring pyramid studs. Beneath the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, the black-plated dial features small black ceramic spheres that symbolically oscillate with the wearer’s movements. Additionally, the dial is embellished with the skull emblem from the band’s comeback announcement video and an hourglass motif, representing the passage of time. The Hublot logo graces the top portion of the dial, while a red “DM” adorns the bottom as a nod to the iconic synthpop group.
Powering the Spirit of Big Bang is the HUB1710 caliber, beating at a frequency of 4Hz and offering a generous 50-hour power reserve. The automatic movement is showcased through the exhibition caseback, revealing the intricate craftsmanship within, along with the band’s name engraved on the reverse side. Complementing the timepiece is a black rubber strap featuring the same pyramid studs found on the bezel. Additionally, the watch comes with a recycled fabric strap for those seeking a more subdued style.
Originating in Basildon, Essex in 1980, Depeche Mode has amassed an impressive discography over the past four decades, comprising 15 studio albums, seven live albums, 10 compilations, 16 box sets, and 60 singles. The band’s enduring partnership with Hublot began 14 years ago, aiming to raise awareness and funds for various environmental and humanitarian causes. Throughout the years, this collaboration has supported initiatives such as the Teenage Cancer Trust and Charity: Water, raising over $2.3 million in donations. Additionally, Hublot is proud to sponsor Depeche Mode’s Memento Mori world tour.
Reflecting on the significance of this collaboration, band members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore expressed their gratitude, stating, “This marks a significant moment for the band as we embark on our first tour in five years, and we are deeply appreciative to have such a wonderful partner standing alongside us once again.”
