Sotheby’s, the renowned auction house, has announced the upcoming auction of a highly sought-after Carat Pink Diamond named “The Eternal Pink.” With an expected selling price of over $35 million USD, this one-of-a-kind gemstone is generating immense excitement among collectors and investors.
Discovered by De Beers in Botswana’s mines just four years ago, The Eternal Pink stands out for its captivating “purplish pink” color, making it the most valuable diamond of its shade ever to grace an auction. Its value is determined by the four Cs: carat, cut, color, and clarity. Experts have classified the stone as “internally flawless,” exhibiting minimal blemishes visible only under extreme magnification. In terms of color grading, it has achieved the highest designation of “fancy vivid,” a distinction attained by a mere 4% of pink diamonds.
Sotheby’s head of Jewelry for the Americas expressed awe at the stone’s beauty, comparing it to the rarity and allure of iconic artworks. The journey of The Eternal Pink began with its transformation from a rough diamond, initially weighing 23.87 carats, into its current refined form, which took six months to achieve. The scarcity of pink diamonds in recent years has driven their value to new heights, as the closure of Australia’s Argyle Mine in 2020 significantly reduced the global supply of these exquisite gems.
The unveiling of The Eternal Pink will take place this weekend in Hong Kong, followed by exhibitions in Dubai, Singapore, and Geneva, before returning to New York for the highly anticipated June sale. The current auction record for a pink diamond or any polished diamond belongs to a 59.6-carat stone sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 2017 for a staggering $71.2 million USD. Another remarkable pink diamond, the 11.15-carat “Williamson Pink Star,” holds the record for the highest per-carat auction price, fetching $58 million USD in the previous year.
As collectors and enthusiasts eagerly await the auction, The Eternal Pink promises to captivate the world with its exceptional beauty and extraordinary value, further solidifying the allure and prestige of these rare pink diamonds in the realm of fine jewelry.
