The latest BMW 7 Series introduces two innovative models that seamlessly integrate exceptional protective capabilities, remarkable ride comfort, spacious interiors, cutting-edge features, and the signature dynamic performance that the brand is renowned for. Breaking new ground as the world’s inaugural protection sedan with a fully electric drive system, the BMW i7 Protection sets a pioneering standard. This model features a potent dual electric motor setup and flawlessly meets the stringent requirements for class VR9 protection, setting no limitations. Similarly, the new traditional combustion-engine BMW 7 Series Protection, equipped with a combustion engine, also meets the VR9 protection standards comprehensively without compromise. Its performance is indicated by its fuel consumption of 15.6 liters per 100 kilometers (equivalent to 18.1 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 355 g/km, figures that are preliminary.
The advanced security approach of the new BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection has been a fundamental aspect of the development of the latest BMW 7 Series lineup. Central to this concept is the pioneering BMW Protection Core, an unparalleled innovation globally. This core comprises a model-specific, self-reinforcing body structure crafted from armor steel. This foundation is enhanced by features including supplementary armor for the underbody and roof, as well as armored glass.
Both the BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection models will undergo an intricate “craft manufacturing” process at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. These two protection-oriented vehicles are scheduled to make their public debut at the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich. Following this, deliveries to customers in need of specialized protection are set to commence in December 2023.
Both the new BMW i7 Protection and the new BMW 7 Series Protection are outfitted with the latest iteration of BMW iDrive, built upon BMW Operating System 8.5. This system boasts user-friendly navigation and functions that BMW drivers are accustomed to. Through this setup, drivers can conveniently access crucial information on the BMW Curved Display, seamlessly integrated within their direct line of sight. Moreover, BMW iDrive facilitates the control of specialized features related to occupant protection, all of which can be easily engaged and managed via the touchscreen functionality of the control display.
The included intercom system in the vehicle allows occupants to communicate with individuals outside the car without the need to open doors or windows. This system incorporates several notable features, such as microphones seamlessly integrated into the exterior mirrors, an external speaker, a hands-free microphone built into the headliner, and additional interior speakers. Additionally, there’s an optional rod microphone that can be installed in the center console storage tray. This feature ensures effective communication with people outside the vehicle even when the windows are closed.
The distinctive star-spoke design light-alloy wheels, unique to each model, are paired with Michelin tires in the size 255-740 R510, specifically engineered for the protection sedans. These tires stand out due to their larger diameter and higher air capacity compared to competitors, contributing to an improved ride comfort. Additionally, the expanded contact area of the tires enhances both traction and driving stability. Notably, the PAX tires are equipped with a runflat ring positioned on the wheel rim, allowing the vehicle to continue driving at speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the event of complete pressure loss.
The new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection stand as pioneers in their respective segments by being the first and sole protection vehicles equipped with Integral Active Steering. This innovative rear-wheel steering feature not only reduces the turning circle during maneuvering but also elevates precision and dynamic responsiveness when navigating sharp turns. A noteworthy advantage of Integral Active Steering, which comes as standard, lies in its ability to enhance the driving comfort for passengers seated in the rear of the vehicle.
