Nike will soon unveil a brand-new version of the iconic Air Force 1 that fans of the WNBA should like.
Nike has released a new pair of Air Force 1 sneakers to honor the Houston Comets, a women’s basketball team that won four consecutive championships in the WNBA’s early years. The shoe design features the team’s colors of Fireball Red, Stardust Silver, and White, Galaxy Blue, with the Comets logo on the heel and a unique pattern on the midsole.
When examined closely, the shoe looks to be a conventional version of the classic design, but the look honors the Houston Comets’ four-peat championship run in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The Houston Comets were founded in 1997 and quickly became a powerhouse in the WNBA, winning the first four championships in league history from 1997 to 2000. The team was led by legendary players such as Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tina Thompson, and their dominance helped to establish the WNBA as a legitimate professional sports league.
The premium white leather upper of the Nike Air Force 1 Low “Four-Peat” is contrasted by a navy and crimson Swoosh design on the sides, a tribute to the Comets’ team colors. The main design elements of the shoe are the text “’97, ’98, 99, ’00” embroidered on the heel tab and the image of a person holding four fingers stitched on the heel counter.. The Comets won four straight WNBA championships during these years. The look is finished off by a white midsole and a navy rubber outsole.
Basketball greats Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tina Thompson, dubbed the “Big 3” of the aforementioned squad during that unheard-of run, led the Houston Comets during their legendary four-peat WNBA championship run.
Despite pictures of the Comets-inspired Nike Air Force 1 Low “Four-Peat” appearing, Nike has not yet disclosed the shoe’s release information.
